Information about the professionals:

Tiburcio Soteno belongs to a large and important family of ceramic artists. Born in 1952, he learnt his skills in early childhood and has passed on his knowledge to his son Israel. The family specialises in making complex clay sculptures termed Arboles de la vida – trees of life. In 1992 Tiburcio was artist in residence at the Museum of Mankind, the ethnographic department of the British Museum. Since then, he has had residencies and received commissions from major galleries all over the world including the Gallery of Modern Art (Glasgow), the Douglas Hyde Gallery (Dublin), The George R. Gardiner Museum of Ceramic Art (Toronto), the UCLA fowler Museum of Cultural History (Los Angeles) and the Naughton Gallery at Queen’s University (Belfast).

Israel Soteno was born in 1982. In 1995 aged 13, he was awarded first prize in Metepec in the category niño artesano (child artisan). He has continued to live up to this early promise, helping out in the family workshop and also making his own highly original ceramic pieces in his spare time while pursuing his formal studies at college.

Sue Flowers is an artist and director of Green Close Studios.
Having studied at Middlesex Polytechnic in Three Dimensional Design, Ceramics, she now practices as a freelance artist and project manager. She has undertaken public art commissions in France, Denmark and widely across the UK. She currently runs and manages the artist-led space in rural North Lancashire, which has built a strong reputation for rural arts delivery and cross-cultural initiatives as well as artist studio provision. This work has been highlighted in the report ‘Cream of the Crop’ Case Studies in good practice in arts development in rural areas of the North West of England, Arts Council England, and also a new publication being written by Jennie Hayes, Dartington College of Art, which highlights Community Arts Practice in Rural Areas across the UK.
